Dear Mr. Miles:

Our group and the laboratory have great interest in the development
of charge-coupled image devices for our area of research. We are
involved in robotics for industrial assembly automation. Solid state
devices have inherent advantages for this application, in particular,
low image distortion and potentially high signal/noise over a wide
dynamic range. Also, we have applications for devices with
relatively low resolution by commercial tv standards, since in our
applications, we are interfacing with minicomputers with moderate
memory sizes. I am involved in a study for our sponsors on image
devices for computer interfacing and robotics requirements.

It would be of great benefit to us and to our students if we could
get an evaluation sample of usable quality of the 500x1 linear array
which has just been announced. We will interface it to our robotics
computer system and familiarize ourselves with the techniques.

I would like to request, in addition, that we be considered when it
becomes possible, for a usable sample of the 100x100 area array.
Although that is not a product now, and may never be, an area array
of this resolution is quite useful for us, and we want to begin
interfacing such a device as soon as possible.

In our courses and research we reach a large number of engineering
students and support a substantial number. The good effects of early
availability of state of the art devices would be widespread among
students.

						Sincerely,
